Hello. My name is Eric
Rowland,
and
I have spent several years (about
seven or eight in all) researching the origins of the Artus family name
and
how it became established in the Manchester area. During this time, I
became a member of the Society of Genealogists and made many, many
visits to the Gloucestershire Records Office, the Public Records Office
at Kew, and numerous other places. My research also brought me into
contact with many members of the extended Artus family, worldwide, and
I must express my gratitude to those people who assisted and encouraged
me, particularly Pam Daw, who supplied the photograph of John Artus
with
his son, documentation on the imprisonment of John and
William
Artus
Jr., and the copies of William Artus's will and inventory.
Cornwall. Also, my indebtedness to my nephew, Mark Murray, of Downpatrick, without whose curiosity and prompting this project would never have been undertaken. It has been great fun, and the result is this site, a collection of documents and pictures which hopefully explains and, at the same time, entertains. The aim of this site is to take some of the hard work out of researching and locating ancestors and relatives with the Artus surname. There is still a long way to go, but hopefully the objective will eventually be achieved. If you think you are connected to this branch of the Artus family, or if you have any information, photographs, etc. regarding the Artus name, I would be delighted to hear from you. Any photographs would, of course, be returned after copying. If you have information concerning births, marriages or deaths not shown on the site, I would be pleased to include them in the current lists. Would the lady member of the Artus family who contacted me (via Paul Artus) from Cornwall in 2006 please get in touch, as my computer crashed at the time and her details were lost. |
